A Hundred Crowns are back with their sophomore EP, Horizon Bound, and the Nottingham five-piece make quite the impression in doing so. Horizon Bound contains more breakdowns than the RAC could ever cover, choruses so catchy you should seek medical advice, and riffs so sweet that your dentist wouldn’t approve.
Horizon Bound is unashamedly heavy, appearing to revel within its metalcore identity, and tracks like ‘In Dreams’ are examples of this. Lead vocalist Joe Fox delivers a haunting performance, contrasted beautifully by the voice of Adam Gallagher. ‘In Dreams’ showcases the two styles working together perfectly, balancing each other out, and the same can be said for ‘Farewell’ and ‘The Haunted’ on this EP.
A Hundred Crowns lull you into a false sense of security on Horizon Bound. ‘Ghost’ sees Gallagher take lead and we are treated to a track that is uncharacteristically gentle, typically emotional, and somewhat of a ‘calm before the storm’ to the chaos that follows. On the other hand, ‘Visitors’ consists almost entirely of the frantic, heavy and raw aspects of A Hundred Crowns that they are certainly showing they are accomplished at.
The varying influences and blends of styles on Horizon Bound increasingly stand out more with each listen, making for an EP that is both bold and impressive. A Hundred Crowns are showing the promising signs of a band heading on an upward trajectory and metalcore fans are going to want to be a part of that journey.
