After releasing part two of their EP trio, quirky prog pioneers Howling Giant have taken the time to tell us the tale of the Black Hole Space Wizard
Hey, how are you guys?
We’re doing great!
To start off, how would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
A war horn sounds off in the distance. You rise from a deep slumber knowing what must be done. The sound of steel on steel as a farmer and his son try to defend their land against the coming horde. This is Howling Giant.
We sound like a collection of all of our influences ranging from punk to doom to classic rock and 70s prog. We like to call it rock and roll.
How does the story of Black Hole Space Wizard begin?
Every story in existence begins with one of 3 things. Hero leaves home, hero comes home, or the stranger comes to town. This is a combination of all three. Our hero escapes from his astral haven only to crash land on the husk of old Earth, where he addresses the concern of the world eater, the Black Hole Space Wizard.
There’s a lot of weird and wonderful ideas on the album, what have been your influences when writing?
Musically, we are almost trying to score the story as if it were a feature film. We are big fans of Black Sabbath, Mastodon, David Bowie, Pallbearer, and really anything that rocks.
What does a day in the studio look like for howling giant?
We try to prepare as much as we can before we go into the studio so we can make our time as efficient as possible. Some bands like to go into the studio for days on end and experiment, whereas we go in with a game plan and know how every minute is going to be spent. It can be frustrating and fairly grueling, but we’ve been happy with the process so far.
What can we expect from part 3?
Riffs. Part 3 is when good faces evil. Conflict, explosions, stuff like that. We’re just now starting to write Part 3, so we have a lot of different ideas. Where Part 2 was focused on doom and groove, Part 3 will bring faster pace and energy.
Upon announcing a tour for your new album, what can we expect from a live set?
We play as a 3 piece live and we always focus on bringing a high energy show.
Finally, what does the future hold for Howling Giant?
We hope to tour quite a bit more and continue to release records. The big goal right now is to be able to tour Europe and play festivals with bands that we love.
Thank you for your time. Any parting words?
The Wizard Lives.
