Release Date – 8th September 2017

Label – Pure Noise Records

The new Four Year Strong comes in the form of an album packed with acoustic re-workings and new tracks, which sees them take a step away from the sound they are so well known for within the pop-punk world.

The record kicks off with a re-working of 2010’s ‘Enemy of the World’ opener ‘It Must Really Suck To Be Four Year Strong Right Now.’ For me, it really falls short of the mark, it is easy to see what is being attempted her but the execution is some way off. The original was a hard-hitting pop-punk anthem but this version has an over reliance on serene piano melodies and gentle guitars, now the latter could go without saying as it is an acoustic record but it’s not a track that works well as such. The next track, ‘Heroes Get Remembered, Legends Never Die’, also a re-working, does not suffer the same problems as the opener. Some of the raw emotion on show in the original is still displayed within this version, something which ‘It Must Really Suck…’ lacked.

‘Nice To Know’ is the first of four previously unheard tracks on this record and those four are certainly the highpoints. Unlike the other tracks, they’ve been written in a way which fits well into this acoustic laidback style, whereas the re-worked material doesn’t necessarily work well as a more mellow piece. Joining ‘Nice To Know’ as new additions to Four Year Strong back catalogue is ‘Let Me Down Again’, ‘Your Ego Is Writing Checks Your Body Can’t Cash’ and album closer, ‘For Our Fathers.’

If you were to listen to a select few tracks off this record, it should be the four new songs. If you haven’t listened to Four Year Strong before then this record shouldn’t be your starting point. I’m sure for dedicated Four Year Strong fans then this record is a nice addition to the collection, it does make pleasant enough background music but I can’t see it as much more than a gap filler between two records, it isn’t made for those who aren’t already well invested in the Massachusetts four-piece. The band sums this record up better than I ever could; ‘Some of You Will Like This, Some of You Won’t.’
